Pump outside 8 Seapark Avenue, Holywood, Co. Down

This is a lever pump, likely constructed between 1920 and 1939. It is located within a roadside walled niche in a housing development in Holywood, County Down. The pump features a plain-shaped column decorated with spiral incised detailing. Inscribed around the top of the column are the words 'McCleave Holywood'. Originally fitted with a cow-tailed handle, it now has a plain tubing replacement, and the original cap has been replaced by a hinged piece of flat metal. The pump has lost its original handle and top, but remains a significant reminder of a time when drinking water was sourced from public supplies. A house and alcove designed to accommodate the pump appear on a 1931 Ordnance Survey map (reference PRONI OS 10/3/1/9/2), although the pump itself is not labelled until a later 1938 map revision.
