Description
The site, now a car park at the west end of the north side of Movilla Street in Newtownards, was formerly occupied by a three-storey terrace block, last used as a sports club. The building was demolished in recent times. Likely constructed around 1880, it had a late Victorian appearance and may have originally served as stores.
The front wall was rendered, lined, and painted, with stone dressings. A dentilled eaves course ran along the top. The second floor featured six blocked window openings, each with a raised segmental arch, keystone, moulded cill, and a panelled apron, and a second-floor moulded string course. The ground floor had six double-height windows with horizontal astragals, slightly recessed, each with a scrolled arch, bevelled keystone, label moulding, moulded cill, and panelled apron. A heavy stone cornice topped the front. The ground floor also featured a series of arched openings, including a segmental-arched doorway with scrolled segmental arches, all except the doorway being windows. These windows all had fluted glazing in varied panes above a blocked lower half. The doorway had a segmental arch transom, a plain fanlight, and a flush panelled door. The rear wall was of rough-dressed Scrabo stone rubble with brick dressings to the openings.
Buildings were shown on the site on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858-60, but the later terrace block was built in a distinctive late Victorian style. The building was removed sometime after 1977.
