Description
This is a fine road bridge, constructed circa 1859-60, spanning a former railway line. Situated on a bend in Killaughey Road, on the western outskirts of Donaghadee, the bridge was built to serve the Donaghadee Branch of the Belfast and Co. Down Railway, which opened in 1861. The bridge is built of random rubble with sandstone dressings to the elliptical arch and a partly chamfered coping to the parapets. A sandstone course runs along each side above the arch. The voussoirs are rock faced, and the intrados are brick. The bridge has a slight hog back, and the roadway is now tarmaced. Significant sections of the bridge’s sides are now covered in greenery. The railway line closed in 1950, but the cuttings remain, necessitating the continued use of the bridge. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and possesses local historical interest due to its style, proportions, plan form, structural system, and setting. Primary source material includes Ordnance Survey maps from 1858-60.
