Description

A cast iron drinking water fountain was installed around 1920 to serve a small development of timber holiday chalets at Andrew's Shorefield, Groomsport. These chalet developments were once common in seaside resorts but are now increasingly replaced by permanent housing, making surviving fountains in their original setting particularly rare and of interest.

The fountain is a cast-iron pillar situated to the northwest of the green. It features a fluted column and cap topped with an acorn finial. A plain spout is situated on one side, with a tap located to the left when viewed from the road. There is no bucket bracket at the base, and no evidence that one was ever present. The top of the column is inscribed in raised letters "GLENFIELD & KENNEDY LD KILMARNOCK" and the plinth is inscribed "GLENFIELD".

The coast to the east of Groomsport began to develop as a resort area from the late 1920s, with caravans and small structures noted in valuation records from the 1920s and 1930s. The chalets at Andrew's Shorefield first appear on the 1939 Ordnance Survey map, suggesting the fountain’s construction was contemporary with the resort development. The fountain was cast by Glenfield & Kennedy Ltd. of Kilmarnock, a company established in 1896 from the merger of two companies founded by Thomas Kennedy, who developed a patented water meter in 1852. The company grew to become a significant producer of valves and hydraulic engineering equipment throughout the Commonwealth. The fountain holds local historical interest and contributes to the group value of the area.
