Description
Peters Bridge is an early Victorian bridge constructed of roughly coursed basalt rubble with a segmental archway of shaped sandstone voussoirs and a sandstone vault. It carries the main road over a railway line. The abutments have battered faces and break forward on either side of the archway, while the parapets are returned square at the extremities. The sandstone copings to the parapets are let down into the stonework below in five places and are feather-edged. The carriageway has a humped profile.
The bridge was built to carry a road over the railway line of the Belfast and Ballymena Railway Company, under the direction of engineer and architect Charles Lanyon, and constructed by contractor William Dargan. Work on the railway line began in November 1845 and the line opened in April 1848. Though the precise date of the bridge's construction is unknown, it was likely built around the same time as a similar bridge at Muckamore, dated 1847.
The bridge stands in an exposed, rural setting in agricultural land, with a single-track railway running underneath. It is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest and lies within a conservation area.
