Description
This is a well-proportioned bridge, likely built between 1780 and 1799, constructed by the O'Neill family of Shane's Castle to carry an estate road over the River Main within Shane's Castle Park. It has group value alongside other listed buildings on the estate.
The bridge is a seven-arched masonry structure running roughly east to west. It is built of random rubble basalt with rough stone voussoirs forming the segmental arches. The bridge has a hump-backed form, with the arches becoming smaller towards the ends. The piers on both faces have triangular cutwaters. On the south face, the parapet slightly projects on a slate course for the first four arches, extending as far as the midpoint of the central arch. A slight offset is visible on the north face where the abutment angles back towards the river bank. The parapets are faced with squared basalt rubble on the inner side, and have copings of rhyolite, splayed outwards at the top. Metal railings formerly surmounted the parapets, but are now gone, with the fixing sockets filled with cement. The parapets terminate at each end with square piers; the pier at the east end is of regularly coursed squared basalt rubble with splayed rhyolite caps, while the pier at the west end is of squared basalt rubble with concrete caps. A rough tarmac carriageway is present, with grass verges.
The bridge is situated in a rural area within a country-house demesne, surrounded by grassy banks, bushes, and trees. It first appeared on Ordnance Survey maps of 1829 and 1832, and is mentioned in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland from 1830-1838. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and retains local historical significance.
