Description
These are a range of early 19th-century outbuildings forming part of the development of Shane's Castle estate and contributing to the group value of the other listed buildings on the estate.
The outbuildings are constructed from basalt rubble with slated roofs, comprising an L-shaped range and several detached blocks. The L-shaped range forms part of two large courtyards: a long two-storey block along the south side with a single-storey return to the north. The two-storey block has snecked basalt rubble walls with rectangular openings, some featuring later red brick or concrete brick dressings, metal framed windows and timber louvres. A taller bay at the east end has large vehicular openings with concrete lintels. The single-storey return block includes an open-fronted shelter and a small enclosed block with a sheeted timber door flanked by small, four-pane timber windows. The detached blocks are plain basalt rubble structures with slated roofs, featuring sheeted doors and timber or metal windows of little architectural distinction. To the west stands a large, two-storey barn of squared rubble, featuring a large brick elliptically arched opening in the south gable, although the west elevation has later concrete block infill walling.
The buildings were built by the O'Neill family for Shane's Castle estate. While the exact date of construction is unknown, these buildings first appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1858. Earlier Ordnance Survey Memoirs from 1838 mention "ranges of cowhouses, cart sheds etc" within the farmyard, suggesting some elements may date back to that time. The buildings stand within the demesne of Shane's Castle, overlooking hard-surfaced yards and driveways, and are part of a larger complex which includes other listed buildings.
