Description
6 Lenamore Avenue is a semi-detached, two-storey Arts & Crafts style house built around 1914, located on the north side of Lenamore Avenue in the residential area of Jordanstown. It has been extended to the west in the original style and includes a single-storey pitched return to the north-east and a sunroom to the north-west. The building is a late example of the Arts & Crafts type and is not of the best quality or design.
The house is rectangular on plan with two bays to the principal south-facing elevation. The pitched and tiled roofs are fitted with timber bargeboards, and roughcast chimneys with projections at their bases retain original clay pots. The walls are painted roughcast with corbelled eaves. Windows are square-headed replacement uPVC casements with original stained glass to some toplights and concrete sills.
The principal south elevation is divided into four bays. Bay one contains a bowed window at ground floor with a flat rolled lead roof over a moulded cornice and a single window at first floor. Bay two features an original timber panelled entrance door with glazed lights, surmounted by a tiled monopitch canopy on timber brackets, a single window at first floor, and a dormer to the attic. Bay three projects and is gabled, comprising a bowed window at ground floor, a single window at first floor, and a small louvered opening to the attic. Bay four contains a window at ground and first floor with a dormer to the attic shared with the adjoining property. The west gable is abutted by the two-storey extension and features a projecting flue to the centre and a single window at ground floor. The north elevation contains an abutted return with a square-headed replacement uPVC glazed door and is further abutted by the uPVC sunroom. The exposed section of the ground floor shows two windows, with a single window and small window at first floor, and a skylight to the roof. The extension contains a single window at first floor. The east elevation is abutted by the adjoining property.
The house retains some of its original architectural character through detailing such as Arts & Crafts inspired elements in the entrance door, internal fireplaces, and timberwork.
The building first appears on the fifth edition Ordnance Survey map of 1920. Valuation Revision records from 1910 to 1920 show several properties previously occupied the site: an 'office and land' occupied by Thomas Houston initially valued at £2 10s, revised to £5; a 'house and garden' also occupied by Thomas Houston valued at £7, revised to £14; and a 'house, office and land' occupied by Maud Atkinson with Isabella Houston listed as lessor, valued at £16 10s. According to the owners, the property was built around 1914 by Kilpatrick Builders and was known as 'Dundela'.
The site is bounded on all sides by mature garden and hedging, with access from Lenamore Avenue at the south. The roofing is finished in artificial tiles, walls are painted roughcast, windows are uPVC, and gutters are uPVC.
