Description
Hollybrook House is a substantial late Georgian farmhouse situated on Magheralane Road, Randalstown. It is a fine example of its period with good architectural presence and setting, accompanied by outbuildings.
The building is a five-bay, two-storey structure with roughcast walls and a slate roof. Three dormers rise from the front face, and the side walls are slate hung. Windows are set within semi-circular headed openings and feature unrecessed sash windows with full glazing bars. The principal elevation is distinguished by a formal entrance door flanked by sidelights and surmounted by a three-pane full-width rectangular fanlight, all enclosed within a plain surround rising to a cornice hood. Greek fret ornament ornaments the area over the main entrance. A rear return with lower roof level repeats similar architectural character. The chimneys are constructed of polychrome red and yellow brickwork. The outbuildings, formerly in poor condition, have since been improved.
The precise date of construction is uncertain. Tradition holds that the house was built in 1760, and it is believed to have been a property of the O'Neill family of Shane's Castle. Documentary evidence places it in the ownership of the Dickey family, mill-owners, by 1778, with the building clearly shown at this location on a 1782 map. By 1833 it served as the residence of Mrs McManus. However, the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of the 1830s merely describe it as unoccupied, and records from 1837 refer only to potential sites for bleach-greens and beetling-engines at the location. Whether these earlier references pertain to the present two-storey block or to a predecessor structure remains unclear. Mapping evidence is inconclusive: the 1829 Ordnance Survey map shows a different arrangement of smaller separate blocks, whilst the 1858 map depicts the present configuration. The polychrome brick chimneys on both the main front block and rear return indicate substantial later Victorian rebuilding, remodelling, or additions. Based on available evidence, the building as it now stands appears to be of at least early-to-mid 19th century date with later 19th century additions, though detailed internal inspection would be required to determine the precise history and phasing of construction.
