Description

Cherry Valley is an early 19th-century house, though it has undergone extensive rebuilding both internally and externally and has lost much of its original fabric as a result. The house is two storeys high with a gabled front and an attic storey, featuring a gabled projecting porch and two yellow brick chimneys positioned equidistant along the ridge. The main entrance faces south. The roof is slated, laid in regular courses, with red terracotta ridge tiles, which are replacements of a slightly differing design. The walls are smooth cement rendered and painted, with rusticated quoins marking the corners. Windows are rectangular, with PVC fixed lights and top-hung vents, replacing the original timber sliding sash windows. Original drip mouldings have been retained above the windows, with a segmental arch over the first-floor windows on the entrance front and a horizontal design elsewhere. Gabled returns are visible at the rear.

The building appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832-3. In the 1830s, Cherry Valley was the residence of Charles Armstrong, who served as an agent to Colonel Pakenham, and was described as a “modern and gentleman-like” house with significant landscaping, including mature trees and old oaks. Later, in the 1890s, it was the home of Mr J.H. McConnell, the Land Commissioner. The house stands in a rural location, facing the road but set well back within a large field, screened by mature trees. The main entrance is marked by low, curving rendered walls and square piers, but currently lacks gates.
