Description

The Priory is a house, likely dating from the 17th century, with significant remodelling around 1830. It is rendered to resemble ashlar, with quoins, and has a steeply pitched slate roof with stone verges. A stone chimney stack stands on the right, while a more recent brick stack is located centrally and to the left. The house is two storeys and seven bays wide. It features casement windows with glazing bars, with louvred shutters on the ground floor. A shaped gable porch is centrally positioned on the first floor, incorporating a four-centred arch headed casement. The entrance below is through a four-centred arch opening with a hood mould; the left spandrel is dated 1529, although this date may have been reset. A single-storey wooden verandah, dating to the early 19th century, extends from either side of the porch, incorporating half-bay returns. A 17th-century extension is present on the right return elevation. The interior was not inspected. The house derives its name from its probable former ownership by the Priory in Taunton prior to the Reformation, and likely served as the Manor House at that time.
