Description
The National Westminster Bank, originally a house, was built in 1708. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with painted stone dressings. The building features a clay double Roman tiled roof between coped gables and brick chimney stacks at each end. It has two storeys and five bays, designed in a rural style. Notable architectural details include a plinth, a heavy string course between the floors, and a cornice mould that leads to a secret gutter. The building has 8-pane sash windows, although some of the lower glazing bars have been removed. These windows are set in rusticated surrounds with plain flat heads and moulded cills. The central entrance has a 9-panel door that is accessed by three steps, framed by a bolection mould surround and topped with a thin early 20th-century open segmental door hood supported by brackets. The interior has been significantly modified at the lower level, while the first floor has not been observed.
