Description

Normans is a house dating from the 17th century, with early 20th century alterations. It has a roughcast exterior and a roof with two distinct parts of different heights; the left side is covered with double-Roman tiles, while the right side has triple-Roman tiles, and there are two brick ridge stacks. The house features a cross-passage plan and is two storeys high with one bay on the left and two bays on the right. The windows are 20th century casements with glazing bars, and the first-floor window in the left bay is set in a half dormer. There is a half-glazed door in the center, topped by a gabled hood supported by two wooden posts.

Inside, there is a plank and muntin partition flanking the cross passage. The room to the right on the ground floor has chamfered and stopped ceiling beams, a broad open fireplace with a wooden bressuier and stone jambs, and the well of a former winder staircase nearby. The first floor features some ornamental plasterwork, including Tudor roses, a fleur-de-lys, small bosses, and the date "1638" in raised letters. This plasterwork is believed to have been created by itinerant craftsmen who paid for their lodgings with their work. The name of the property is thought to come from a Norman who occupied the site in the 11th century. The house is listed primarily for its internal features.
