Description
This is a cottage with walls that enclose a former kitchen garden, located about 50 meters southwest of Chilworthy House. The walls are likely from the late 19th century and are made of random rubble local stone, topped with double florin and ridge tile coping. There are brick gatepiers with stone obelisks. The garden is rectangular, covering about three-quarters of an acre, with gatepiers on the west side. The cottage's gable end is integrated into the garden wall. On the north front, there is a doorway with a brick surround that was once part of a range of buildings shown on an old map, but those buildings have since been demolished. The entrance was partly rebuilt in the late 20th century in the northeast corner, closest to Chilworthy House.
The cottage itself is constructed of random local stone and has a double Roman tile roof with a bell-cast and overhanging eaves that slope down over the entrance on the north side. The design is in the Arts and Crafts style and likely consists of two cells and a cross passage. One end has a half storey, with a central rectangular dormer featuring three-light casements flanking a central two-light window. All other openings have concrete lintels with incised segmental heads. The ground floor on the left is partly obscured by the gable end of a lean-to, with a single light window to the left of the entrance, a three-light window to the right, and a central door with a nine-pane light. The left return of the cottage is built into the garden wall, featuring a three-light gable end and a four-light window below.
