Description

The former engine shed, built around 1846, was designed by G T Andrews for George Hudson's Great North of England Railway. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof that was removed during the last survey. The building is single storey and consists of eight bays, featuring quoins and segmental-arched openings. Doorways, likely not original, are found in bays 1, 5, and 7, while the other bays originally had windows that are now blocked and partly bricked up at the front. The hipped roof once had a raised louvred ventilator along the apex, which has been recently demolished. At the rear, there are eight original small-pane windows that are characteristic of G T Andrews' railway architecture. The left and right sides of the building have a large round-arched blocked engine opening closer to the front and a large flat-headed opening nearer the rear. Inside, there is a central spine wall that divides the building longitudinally, and a floor in the front half may have been added later. The roof features queen-post construction. The building was derelict at the time of the last survey and is part of an important group of surviving railway buildings.
