Description
Watergate is a house built in 1665, with extensive rebuilding completed in 1880. It is constructed from coursed gritstone rubble and features a Westmorland slate roof. The building has two storeys and three bays, consisting of a two-bay range on the left with a projecting two-storey porch, and a large projecting gabled wing on the right. The corners of the building are marked by quoins.
There are three steps leading up to the porch entrance, which has a chamfered surround and an ornate lintel with a scalloped lower edge, featuring a panel with '16 SS 65' in relief. Above the porch, there is a hood-mould over a stepped three-light double-chamfered mullioned window, along with a small rectangular opening in the gable.
On the left side, there is a four-light double-chamfered mullioned window with a hood-mould, and a three-light mullioned window above it. To the right of the porch, there is a single-light double-chamfered window and a tall two-light mullioned window above.
The right gabled wing has a four-light double-chamfered mullioned window on both the ground and first floors, and a small round-arched window in the gable, which is set above a date stone inscribed with '1880' and an anchor in relief. The building also features kneelers, gable coping, and chimney stacks located at the left end and the ridge of the wing.
