Description
Ganton Hall is a country house dating to around 1860, constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The roofs have raised gables and numerous tall brick stacks. The building incorporates chamfered plinths, flush ashlar quoins, a narrow first-floor band, and moulded eaves. The overall layout is an “H” shape.
The south-east front features five bays. The central section is recessed and contains three plain sash windows on each floor, each set within ashlar surrounds. Flanking these are single two-storey canted bay windows with plain sashes and ashlar surrounds, each topped with a curved gable, ashlar coping, and a single smaller plain sash window.
The south-west front presents three bays. A two-storey canted bay window is positioned to the left, and to the right is a square bay window with a strapwork parapet and two plain sashes above.
The north-west entrance front is arranged in five irregular bays. The recessed central bay has a projecting ashlar porch to the right, featuring coupled Doric columns supporting an entablature and plain parapet, and containing a large door with narrow flanking lights. To the left of the porch is a single plain sash window, and above, a tripartite sash and a single plain sash. A projecting bay to the right has a single plain sash window on each floor, with a smaller sash above in a curved gable. A projecting bay to the left is obscured by a lower service wing, and has two narrow sashes on the ground floor and a small sash above, with another sash in the curved gable.
The service wing is lower in height, single-storey with an attic. The south-west front includes a curved link containing a doorway with a four-panel door and overlight, above which is an ashlar panel and a gabled dormer window. To the left are three plain sashes, with three through-eaves dormers above. A projecting bay with a single sash window to each floor, under a curved gable, is situated beyond. The north-west front has five bays with a slightly projecting centre and a large gable. Five plain sashes are present, with a central sash flanked by two through-eaves dormers above.
The interior features main reception rooms with elaborate coving and good-quality marble fireplaces with mirrored overmantles. A fine wooden staircase has turned balusters and square newels with finials. The laundry retains its original stove and drying shelves.
