Description

House. Dated 1679, with remains from the 16th century and alterations in the 18th century. The house is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with a graduated stone slate roof. It comprises a 2-storey, 2-bay main range, alongside an earlier 2-storey bay to the right. Quoins are visible. The main block features a central 6-panel door set beneath a large, shallow 4-centred arched lintel ornamented with a recessed panel bearing the relief date ‘R’. A sundial sits above the door. Flanking the door on each floor are 4-light mullion windows with recessed mullions, these being dated 1679. End stacks are present. The bay to the right has a 20th-century glazed door with a very large lintel, decorated with a wavy chamfer and incorporated into the corner of the building as a quoin. A 4-light recessed chamfered mullion window is positioned to the left of the door, above which sits a hoodmould with a single large scrolled label stop. The first floor of this bay features a window of 4 round-arched lights with chamfered mullions and ball ornament in the spandrels. A large corniced external stack is on the right gable. The rear elevation includes a transomed stair window and 2-light windows to the left on each floor, and to the right on the first floor. Inside the main range, the front room on the left has a large fireplace with single-stone jambs and lintel. The central stairwell in the rear is partitioned from the other rear rooms by a timber frame and late 17th-century oak panelling, incorporating contemporary doors. Friezes at first-floor level display stylised leaf motifs, and the stairs feature splat balusters over two flights. The earlier bay retains a large fireplace which was altered in the mid-20th century, but the oven remains.
