Description

St Agnes House, formerly known as No 16 (St Agnes Lodge), is a Grade II* listed building dating from 1693, attributed to carpenter Abraham Smith, as indicated by the inscription "Abraham Smith 1693" painted on one of the purlins. The building is constructed of brick, now roughcast, and features a pantiled roof. It stands two storeys tall with attics and has five bays, including circular windows each adorned with four keystones, although one has been replaced by a neo-Georgian bay. The entrance boasts a heavily rusticated door with a quintuple keystone. At the west end, there is a very large chimney breast with set backs, each marked by small triangular or segmental pediments, likely made of moulded brick. The rear wing is two storeys high and consists of one bay, featuring a contemporary shaped gable.

Inside, the house showcases good contemporary wainscotting and includes three diagonally placed fireplaces. The staircase is notable for its fat vase-shaped balusters, closed string, and a scrolled console against the lower newel, similar to the staircase at No 14 High St Agnesgate. Additionally, there are two contemporary paintings set into the wainscotting in the overmantels of two first-floor rooms, one of which depicts a rural scene with a signpost that appears to bear the initials: RM E CA IN.
