Description

SE 3171 RIPON HIGH SAINT AGNESGATE 1/7 (south side) 27.5.49 No 16 (St Agnes House) [formerly listed as No 16 (St Agnes Lodge)]

II*

  1. Carpenter: Abraham Smith. (So much can at least be conjectured from the words "Abraham Smith 1693" painted on to one of the purlins). Brick, now roughcast. Pantiled roof. Two storeys and attics. Five bays: circular windows with 4 keystones each (one replaced by neo-Georgian bay). Heavily rusticated door with quintuple keystone. Very large chimneybreast at west end, with set backs each marked by small triangular or segemental pediments, presumably in moulded brick. Rear wing: 2 storeys, and one bay, with contemporary shaped gable.

Interior. Good contemporary wainscotting. Three diagonally placed fireplaces. Staircase with fat vase-shaped balusters, closed string and scrolled console against lower newel (cf No 14 High St Agnesgate). Two contemporary paintings set into the wainscotting in overmantels of 2 first floor rooms. One shows a rural scene in the foreground of which is a signpost, apparently bearing the initials:
