Description
Nos 3 to 8 and No 8A West Square is a terrace built around 1840, located on the east side of the square. The building is three storeys high and constructed of painted brick. It features a moulded frieze and a shallow eaves cornice beneath a gable end slate roof, along with a sill course on the first floor. Each of the main houses has two windows with recessed sashes that retain their glazing bars. No 5 stands out with a tripartite bow window on the ground floor, complete with a frieze and cornice. Nos 4, 7, and 8 have two-storey pilastered canted wood bay windows on the ground and first floors, adorned with moulded cornices. No 6 includes a later Victorian canted bay window on the ground floor. The doors are made up of four moulded panels and have rectangular fanlights set within stucco panelled strips, which feature moulded console brackets supporting projecting cornices. No 8A is a later addition at the north end, featuring a tripartite and single sash window on each floor, with a cut brick eaves cornice. This terrace is likely the first part of the square to be constructed. All the listed buildings in West Square are considered to form a cohesive group.
