Description
The Coachman Inn, now a hotel, dates from the late 18th century and has undergone 20th-century alterations and extensions. It is constructed of herringbone-tooled sandstone to the front and right side, squared sandstone to the rear, with the left side rendered; the roof is covered in pantiles with brick stacks, one of which has been rebuilt and rendered. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with a central-stairhall plan, and has been extended to the left, connecting to other buildings. The main front has three bays and three storeys, with a single-storey outbuilding extension to the left. The front door consists of raised and fielded panels, the bottom panel being a diagonal cross design, and a small-pane overlight. The windows are 12-pane sashes to the ground and first floors, and 2-light horizontal-sliding 12-pane sashes to the second floor. All windows have painted stone sills. The ground and first-floor openings have tripartite keyed lintels, while the second-floor openings have shaped lintels that interrupt the stepped eaves course. A coped gable and kneeler are present on the left side. The roof is hipped to the right, with an end stack on the left. The outbuilding extension has a 20th-century glazed door and a canted bay with small-pane windows on its right side. The right return front mirrors the front facade, with three windows on each of the three floors, featuring similar details. A coped gable and kneeler are on the right side, and there are end and centre-left stacks.
