Description

Moor House Farm comprises a farmhouse and attached outbuildings, forming an unusual and complete courtyard plan dating mostly from the early to mid-19th century, with several phases of construction. The buildings are primarily of mottled brownish brick in an irregular English garden wall bond, with pantile roofs.

The farmhouse is the principal element, a two-storey, two-bay structure situated on the south side of the courtyard. A two-bay wing extends to the rear left, and a small single-storey wash-kitchen forms the west side. To the north lies a cowhouse and stable range of varying builds, while a range of loose boxes occupies the east side. A high brick wall (approximately 2 metres) with a wide gateway runs along the south side of the yard, connecting to the house and forming the south wall of an attached privy block.

The main entrance to the farmhouse is a four-panel door within a timber frame, surmounted by a flat brick arch. To the right of the door are two 12-pane side-sliding sash windows on each floor, also within segmental brick arches. Stepped eaves and end stacks are present. The west side of the farmhouse wing features a four-panel door and a three-light, 24-pane sash window, both under segmental brick arches. An inserted board taking-in door replaces a window on the first floor.

The wash-kitchen has a boarded door and a central stack. The north side features a cowhouse with a loft above, with a slatted opening in the west gable and a blocked doorway and small window in the east gable. To the east of the cowhouse is a lower stable range, containing a throughway, stable doors, and a part-slatted window. The east range of loose boxes has board stable doors.

Inside the courtyard, a quadrant wall curves from the privy towards the house and then runs northwards, separating access to the wash-kitchen and rear of the house from the rest of the farmyard.

Internally, the farmhouse has panelled doors, fitted cupboards, and original iron grates in plain fireplaces on the first floor. The wash-kitchen has a quarry tile floor and a boiler in one corner. The cow byre and stable range feature cobbled floors and stalls. The privy contains a two-seater privy with wooden seats on stone slabs. The farm buildings were in a state of disrepair at the time of the survey. The farm represents a rare survival and an unusually complete farmyard group of its period.
