Description
Selby Public Library is a mid-19th century building constructed of pink brick with ashlar dressings and a pitched slate roof. It stands two storeys tall and features a first-floor string course. The façade is divided into two principal bays, each containing three round-headed lancets. The lancets on the first floor are set within giant semi-circular relieving arches, and each bay is topped with a moulded gable. Between the bays is a slightly raised pedimented centrepiece that includes a round-headed window with shafted reveals and moulded voussoirs. The outer bays, which are gabled on the end elevations, have paired round-arched lancets on the first floor and round-headed doors on the ground floor. The design reflects the best of contemporary classicism and shows influences from French architecture, such as Hittoff's Gare du Nord in Paris.
