Description

Selby College of Further Education, the Shipbuilding Department, was built in 1811 and was formerly known as the Subscription School. The building is constructed of brown brick and features a hipped pantiled roof. It has two storeys and a brick cornice with modillions at the eaves. The front has one bay, which includes a Venetian window on the first floor with intersecting glazing bars. There are two four-panelled doors topped with semi-circular fanlights. An ashlar plaque on the building is inscribed with "School. BUILT BY SUBSCRIPTION. 1811". The main promoters of the Subscription School were William Massey and James Audus the younger, notable local benefactors.
