Description

High Lodges of Aske Hall consists of a gateway, gates, screen walls, and two lodges, built around 1847 and 1897 for the Earl of Zetland. The structures are made of ashlar sandstone with stone slate roofs and wrought-iron gates. The screen walls curve in plan and feature interval pilasters topped with small obelisk finials, raised terminating piers with bases, and vermiculated banding at the coping level, along with cornices and blocking. The gateway has a round arch with a vermiculated keystone and interval voussoirs, with spandrels adorned with wreaths and intertwined initials. It is flanked by paired Tuscan pilasters that also have vermiculated bands and lozenge panels on the dado, with brackets supporting the cornice. The gates are decorated with scrollwork.

The lodges are of a matching design, with the east lodge dated 1847 and the west lodge 1897. They have an L-shaped plan, are single-storey, and feature a gable wing projecting from the north end, with one bay on each side. In the angle, there is a flat-roofed porch with two round-arched sides. Each bay contains a three-light mullioned-and-transom window set in an architrave, flanked by paired Tuscan pilasters, with a dated shield above in a gabled projection. The north returns have cross windows, while the south returns have three-light matching windows with blind shields above. There are 20th-century rear extensions that are not of special interest. The gates were created to celebrate the success of the racehorse Voltigeur, who won The Epsom Derby in 1850.
