Description
This is a road bridge located approximately 60 metres south-west of the Church of St Cuthbert. It likely dates back to the medieval period, with some features from the mid-19th century. The bridge is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and large blocks of tooled stone used for the footings. It has a shallow, double-chamfered pointed arch, which is supported by five chamfered ribs on the underside. Flanking the arch are short, shallow buttresses with offset tops, and outside these are narrower, full-height offset buttresses. Above the arch, there are ogee-headed niches on each side that contain shields depicting the arms of Dawnay and Pagot. The parapet has chamfered coping and rises to a peak above the arch. The side walls end in wide quoined buttresses with offsets, except for the north-east wall, which continues to connect with the churchyard wall.
