Description

The Church of St James is a late 19th-century church located on Main Street in Grewelthorpe. It is built from coursed squared stone and ashlar, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The church features a nave with a south porch and a north aisle, as well as a chancel with a vestry. The nave consists of four bays and includes a plinth and diagonal offset buttresses at the west end, with additional buttresses between the bays. The west end has a pointed two-light window with reticulated tracery and a hoodmould. The west bay features a gabled porch with a pointed-arched doorway, also with a hoodmould, along with stone coping and a gable cross. The central bays contain cusped lancets, while the east bay has paired lancets. The north aisle mirrors this design. The church has stone coping and an offset gabled bellcote at the west, which houses a bell in a chamfered pointed-arched opening, along with a gable cross on the eastern side. The chancel has a plinth and an offset angle buttress to the east. It consists of one bay with a board priest's door set in a chamfered Caernarvon arched stone surround, and to the right, there are paired cusped lancets. The pointed east window features three lights with a hoodmould and reticulated tracery, along with stone coping and a gable cross. Inside, there is a four-bay arcade with round piers and chamfered pointed arches, and the chancel arch is similar in design.
