Description

The Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1867-68 by Charles Kirk of Sleaford for John Dent of Ribston Hall. It is constructed from pink sandstone and ashlar, with a roof made of Westmorland slate. The church features a 14th-century Gothic-style four-bay nave flanked by north and south aisles. At the west end of the south aisle is a three-stage tower topped with a tall broach spire, and there is a south porch leading into the church. The south porch has a hood-mould with head stops, which may depict Queen Victoria and the donor. The main entrance door is adorned with fine wrought-iron strap hinges.

The church contains two- and three-light plate tracery windows throughout, along with lucarnes on the spire. The chancel is supported by offset flat buttresses, and decorative stonework can be seen along the eaves, with ashlar copings. Inside, there is a lofty arcade with pointed arches leading to the south aisle, and original fittings are preserved throughout, including a font located beneath the tower, a pulpit, a fine organ, and a reredos featuring decorated polychrome tiles. The chancel has a grey marble floor and retains original light fittings.

The stained glass in the west end was created by Meyer of Munich, while the east end features glass by Hughes of London. There is a stone memorial to Sir Henry Goodricke, who died in 1833, located at the east end of the south arcade. Additionally, there are numerous brass memorials dedicated to members of the Dent family, including one for Joseph Jonathan Dent Dent, who passed away in 1907 after serving 52 years in the parish.
