Description

The Grange is a mid-18th century house, originally built for the Dawnays of Beningbrough Hall, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is now used as a restaurant. The house is constructed of orange-pink brick in stretcher bond, with the front being rendered, and has pantile roofs. It comprises a two-storey, three-bay main front with a projecting central bay, and a three-bay wing to the rear right.

The main front has a 20th-century glazed portico concealing the central doorway, flanked by 20th-century canted bay windows. The first floor has 20th-century 16-pane sash windows in flush wood architraves, set under channelled wedge lintels and with stone cills. Brick kneelers are present. The roof has raised verges, and end stacks.

The right return shows a main range with a plinth and a four-course band. The wing has a window where a door has been inserted, and other windows are 16-pane sashes (some 20th century) under flat brick arches with stone cills, a four-course band, a dentilled eaves band, and stacks to the centre of the ridge and to the right end.

The interior includes an original dog-leg staircase with an open string, located opposite the main doorway. The staircase features three balusters per tread, having a column and vase design, a moulded handrail, and newel posts. A front right room contains a shell niche with a wooden architrave, and a left room has imported panelling.
