Description
The Weighing Machine House, built around 1835, was constructed for the Whitby-Scarborough Railway Company under engineer Robert Stephenson. This single-storey building features finely cut ashlar stone with ashlar dressings and has a semi-circular plan. The northwest front includes a large window opening framed by a raised and curved ashlar surround, topped by a shallow curved ashlar cornice. On either side of the main opening are set back doorways, each with curved ashlar surrounds, along with additional doorways at right angles, also featuring curved surrounds. The curved rear wall has two side windows and a central blocked window. The building is currently in a ruinous state, with many stones lying loose around the site.
