Description
No 1 Bondgate is a building dating from 1758, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The south gable features iron ties with the figures 5 and 8, while the north gable has a single initial C, likely representing the year 1758 and a person named Wilder. The building is constructed of colour-washed brick and has a slate roof, with coped brick gable ends supported by brick kneelers. The end stacks are from the 18th century and have one batter.
The structure is two storeys high and appears to have originally been three storeys. It has a wooden modillion eaves cornice and a brick band. The front facade consists of four bays of sash windows, which have 19th-century channelled stucco voussoirs. The entrance features a 19th-century door with four moulded panels, two of which are glazed, set in a moulded wooden frame topped with a moulded cornice. There is also a shop window with a moulded wooden frame, a panel bracket, and a moulded cornice. In front of the house, there are cast iron railings extending to the parapet of Bondgate Bridge, adorned with spear and fleur-de-lys finials.
Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase with a closed string, plain newels, and turned vase-shaped balusters.
