Description
The presbytery to St Wilfred's Church, built between 1858 and 1862, is designed in the Gothic Revival style by J A Hanson. It features coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a banded slate roof with coped gables. The building has four chimneys, one of which retains moulded ashlar stacks, while two have been rebuilt in brick and reduced in size. A chamfered plinth supports the structure.
The west front consists of seven very irregular bays. An off-centre doorway has a pointed surround and a plank door with ornate iron hinges, flanked by tall lancet windows with sashes, all within a lean-to porch. Above the porch is a three-light mullion window with sashes. To the left, there is a projecting semi-circular stair turret featuring three rising lancets with plate tracery, a moulded cill band, a red sandstone impost band, and alternate voussoirs. Adjacent to the turret is a single-storey wing with two lancets, followed by a two-storey gabled cross wing. On the right, a broader gabled cross wing has pairs of segment-headed sash windows on either side of a buttress, which supports canted oriel windows above, also with segment-headed sashes and pairs of pointed overlights, topped with a hipped stone roof. Further to the right, there is a single narrow sash window and above it, a pair of plain sashes.
