Description

Catterick Camp and Aerodrome War Memorial is a First World War memorial located at the northern end of Catterick village, positioned on an embankment along High Street (A6136). The memorial features an oak Calvary cross, painted white, with a painted sculpture of the Crucifixion beneath an oak canopy on its north-east face. The cross is set on a four-sided, chamfered plinth that rests on a single step base.

The north-east face of the plinth bears an inscription that reads, "SACRED TO THE MEMORY/ OF THE OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSIONED/ OFFICERS AND MEN OF CATTERICK/ CAMP AND AERODROME WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE." Above the inscription is an incised cross pattée symbol, with additional symbols at the bottom corners of the plinth.

The memorial is situated on a raised platform made of narrow, regular-coursed stone and is enclosed on the north-east side by metal railings adorned with fleur-de-lys style finials. The other sides are bordered by low stone walls that match the platform's construction, featuring quoins at the corners and flat stone coping. Access to the memorial is via a flight of stone steps leading up the embankment, with low, flanking stone walls and flat copings at the top of the steps.
