Description
The Cloisters is a building from 1811 designed by R. Smirke, serving as a visual endpoint for the lower section of the main street in Appleby in Westmorland. It features an arcade with seven pointed arches made of ashlar, with the three central arches open to provide access to the churchyard through a rear gate. Above the arcade is a battlemented parapet. The central section is raised and displays the Appleby arms along with the date 1811 in a quatrefoil panel. At both ends of the arcade, there are square two-storey towers topped with machicolated parapets. Each tower has a square-headed door and window on the lower level, with lancet windows above that have hood-moulds. The tower on the right (east) serves as a shop, known as No. 1 Boroughgate.
