Description

Town End House and The Courts is a building dating from 1777, located on Main Street. It is two storeys high with a basement, constructed of ashlar stone and topped with a slate roof. The building features three chimneys and has a symmetrical five-bay front, with an additional sixth bay added in the same style on the left side. The facade includes rustication that is vermiculated at the basement lintels and banded at the ground floor sills. There are two string courses and a modillion cornice, along with rainwater heads marked "R.G. 1777" for Richard Gathorne. The windows have sills and plain reveals, with sash frames that include all glazing bars. The fourth window on the first floor is tripartite and forms a canted bay supported by two Doric columns over the doorway, which features a six-panel door. Wrought iron railings on a stone plinth with some urn finials run across the front.

To the left, there is an extension added after 1870, which is two storeys but lower and lacks a cornice. This extension has one chimney and one window. The rear of the building is made of rubble and includes a two-storey semi-circular bay with an eaves cornice. The windows here have plain stone surrounds and are sashed, with the bay windows being tripartite. A tall stair window features glazing bars, and there is a modern door.

Inside, the front hall has an alcove with an elliptical arch in wood. The open string staircase has stick balusters and a continuous wreathed handrail, with a small plaster design of roses on the ceiling above the staircase. Most windows have raised and fielded panelled shutters. It is said that the walls of cottages that previously occupied the site still survive in the basement. Adjacent to the left side of the house are two sandstone gatepiers with chamfered rustication and ball finials.
