Description
The Sedgwick Aqueduct, built in 1818 by engineer William Crosley, is an aqueduct on the Lancaster/Kendal Canal. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone with limestone ashlar dressings, featuring a limestone string and copings along the parapet. The aqueduct includes a tunnel over the roadway, positioned at an angle to the canal's direction, which has a segmental arched opening adorned with rusticated voussoirs and a keystone. This opening is flanked by rusticated tapering pilasters that are curved in section. Above the arch, there is a blank panel that was likely intended for an inscription. The structure also has massive curved retaining walls, with a flight of stone steps located behind the wall to the northwest. The aqueduct is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
