Description
The premises occupied by the YMCA, located at 44 and 45 Irish Street, is a mid-18th century building arranged in an open courtyard plan, serving as a prominent feature at the southern end of the Market Place. The building is two storeys high. The central block, occupied by the YMCA, features a slightly projecting porch with a doorway and a cornice supported by console brackets. Above the door is a 12-paned sash window, and there is a gabled dormer above the eaves cornice. Each side of the porch has two sash windows on both floors.
At each end of the building, there are projecting wings: No 44 on the left has a panelled door and one window on each floor facing the street, while No 45 on the right features a 19th-century shop front with a window above. Nos 41 to 45, along with the YMCA, form a cohesive group.
