Description

Anthorn Cross is a cross that is probably medieval in origin. It is made of red sandstone and is a rough, cross-shaped stone set into the ground. The stone is too weathered to determine its original shape. There is a suggestion that this cross marks the site of a battle with the Scots. However, a similar cross, known as Fishers' Cross, located at Port Carlisle, indicates that these crosses may have been erected along the coast to guide fishermen along an otherwise featureless and flat coastline.
