Description
The dovecote, located approximately 20 meters west of the west front of Castle Ashby, dates from around 1800 and was restored in the 20th century. It is constructed of timber and features a square shape with a pyramidal ridged timber roof supported by a square Doric pillar. Inside, there are three tiers of roostings, with the central openings having cusped arched heads and the others being round-headed. Perches are positioned below the roostings on brackets, and the structure has overhanging bracketed eaves. There is also a wider perch below the capital of the supporting post, which is on curved brackets. A dovecote has existed in this location since at least the 17th century, and the current structure is depicted in a drawing by George Clarke of Scaldwell from around 1820.
