Description
The Wheatsheaf Hotel, located at 44 Sheaf Street, is an early 17th-century building that was refronted in the early to mid 19th century. The hotel features a stucco front with a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate. It stands three storeys tall and has seven sash windows set in reveals. The building has a tall plinth and rusticated quoins, along with an arched doorway that leads to a wide carriage entrance. At the back, there are tiled-roofed wings surrounding a central courtyard.
Inside, the hotel includes rooms that are said to retain original panelling used by Charles I before the battle of Naseby. One room is reputed to have painted canvas ornamentation. Additionally, there is a notable 17th-century staircase. The Wheatsheaf Hotel is included in the listing partly for its historical significance.
