Description
Nos 47 and 49 on Sheaf Street are 18th-century buildings that have been altered. They feature red stretchers and pink headers with a tiled roof. The buildings stand three storeys high and have a stone and stucco plinth. There are five sash windows with glazing bars, reveals, flat arches, and keystones. The central doorway, dating from the early 19th century, has a four-panel door, an oblong fanlight, and is flanked by slim reeded Doric pilasters, with a frieze and a cornice hood above. On the right, there is a modern restaurant front, while a plaque at first floor level on the left notes that Joseph Priestley, the scientist, resided here as a student of Doddridge's Academy from 1752 to 1755.
