Description

This warehouse was built in 1900 by Alexander Ellis Anderson for Malcolm Inglis and Company, a Glasgow firm. Constructed of red brick and Weldon stone ashlar, with a slate roof and brick stacks, it occupies a corner site on Fish Street. The design incorporates Wrennaissance style features. The building is four storeys high, with an attic and basement, and measures 6 1/2 bays along Fish Street and 3 1/2 bays along The Riding. The ground floor is rusticated ashlar with an entablature featuring a large cornice. A round arch doorway is located in bay 4 of the west front. The main entrance, on the northwest corner, is topped by a semi-circular canopy supported by acanthus brackets bearing finely carved armorial bearings and draped female figures, the work of A Broadbent of London. A curved panel above the doorway reads ‘Malcolm Inglis and Company, Glasgow,’ flanked by pilasters with city coats of arms. A round third-floor window is adorned with carved festoons and the inscription 'est 1796' below. The first, second, and third floor bays are divided by giant rusticated pilasters—brick on the first floor—supporting a deeply moulded entablature with modillions, and feature segmental-headed windows with two-light sashes. The attic storey has rusticated stone window architraves and brick pilasters, with the cornice projecting forward above. The rear elevation is plain. Inside, floors are supported by cast-iron columns. A wide mahogany and oak open-well staircase is centrally located at the rear, and the attic storey is open to the roof, displaying queen-post trusses.
