Description

The former Weedon Barracks features enclosure walls, south-east and south-west bastions, and gate piers to the south-east. Constructed in Flemish bond red brick, the walls have stone coping, while the gate piers are also capped with stone. The site includes ten casemates arranged in groups of four and six along the angle formed by the corner of the perimeter wall. Each end has a casemate, likely used for storing artillery pieces, flanking a wall that spans the angle and has a central segmental-arched entrance. The casemates have semi-circular vaults topped with a bomb-proof layer of sand and gravel, which is covered by bricks and a stone-flag walkway. This walkway features a low parapet with stone coping and is accessible via ramps and stone-paved stairs. The site includes pintle hinges and fittings for doors, with some original wooden slatted doors still in place. A square concrete base in the corner was used for anti-aircraft machine guns during early World War II. Loopholes, likely added in 1831, were enlarged in the late 19th century. The enclosure walls form a complete section along the southern perimeter of the site, extending northwards to meet the East Lodge and West Lodge, with gate piers flanking the entrance to the south-east. This structure is part of a unique planned military-industrial complex, which includes its own defensible transport system and surrounding walls.
