Description
The former Weedon Barracks, specifically the outer wall and north-west bastion, were built between 1804 and 1810 for the purpose of securing the site. Constructed from red brick in Flemish bond, the north-east bastion features stone coping. The structure includes ten casemates arranged in groups of four and six along the angles of the perimeter wall, with a casemate at each end likely used for storing artillery pieces. These casemates are topped with semi-circular vaults and covered by a bomb-proof layer of sand and gravel, which is capped with bricks and a stone-flag walkway that has a low parapet with stone coping. Access to the walkway is provided by ramps and stone-paved stairs. The casemates also feature pintle hinges and fittings for doors.
In the corner of the bastion, there is a square concrete base that was used for anti-aircraft machine guns during the early part of World War II. Loopholes, which were likely added later as part of modifications ordered in 1831, were enlarged in the late 19th century. The perimeter wall that once extended to meet West Lodge has been demolished, while the eastern section connects to a late 19th-century storehouse (not included in this listing) and a short length of perimeter wall that is attached to the north-east bastion.
This structure is part of a unique planned military-industrial complex, which includes its own defensible transport system and surrounding walls. For further details, refer to the description of Storehouse No. 2.
