Description
The George and Dragon Inn, located on the south side of High Street in West Wycombe, dates from around 1720 and features a refronting of an earlier structure. The building is constructed of red brick with a stucco ground floor and has an old tiled hipped roof. It stands three storeys tall and is distinguished by four giant stucco rusticated Doric pilasters, which were formerly Ionic, with bases at the first floor level and plain plinths at the ground floor. The windows are double hung sash types with cambered relieving arches and projecting keyblocks, arranged irregularly, with several dummy windows.
On the ground floor, there are three canted bay windows, one supported by brackets, all topped with cornices; the rightmost bay features an entablature. To the left of the central carriageway is one bay window, with two more to the right. The entrance consists of a four flush panel door with a narrow rectangular fanlight and a cornice hood above. An 18th-century lead sign is displayed. The timber framework is exposed in the carriageway and on the back elevation.
The yard includes an east side stable wing made of flint rubble dressed with colour washed brick, which is a single storey with three windows. The west wing facing the yard has a colour washed brick ground floor and a timber framed colour washed brick nogged first floor, with an old tiled roof that oversails on exposed corbels. Local lore suggests that the gardens are haunted by a "white lady." The George and Dragon Inn is part of a group of buildings that includes adjacent properties and notable structures such as the Swan Public House and the West Wycombe Branch County Library.
