Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Old Bakery Cottages are a timber-framed house, originally dating from the 17th century. The exterior has been rendered. The house is two storeys high with four bays. The timber frame is exposed to the rear, while the front and gable have whitewashed render. The roof is steeply pitched and currently thatched. There are rendered stacks located on the left-hand gable and to the right of centre. The ground floor plan is irregular. Externally, the ground floor features a 19th-century three-light casement with a post acting as a mullion in the left-hand bay, alongside a door to the right. A barred window is present in the second bay, and the right-hand bays have red wall tiles, with a 20th-century shop door to the left and a window to the right. The first floor has barred casements, with those in bays two and four being semi-dormers.

Inside, the original timber frame remains intact, and there is a large chimney stack to the right of centre. A massive chamfered spine beam with stop-chamfered joists is found in the right-hand ground floor room.

The adjacent house to the right, No. 3 Old Bakery Cottages, which dates from the 19th century, is not of special interest and is excluded from the listing.

The house dates back to the 17th century and was originally listed on 22 August 1983. It initially had a corrugated iron roof, which has since been replaced with thatch.

Nos. 1 and 2 Old Bakery Cottages are designated at Grade II as a well-preserved vernacular building dating to the 17th century, retaining its intact timber frame.
