Description
Ardenham House, built around 1780-1790 for the sister-in-law of the sculptor Nollekens, is a three-storey red brick building. The front features a parapet with panels of blind balustrading above a moulded string cornice. It has a three-bay layout with two square windows and a central three-light semi-circular window on the second floor. The first floor includes two tall windows with keystones above the arches and a central three-light window with a frieze and cornice above. On the ground floor, there are two windows and a central four-panel door, with the upper panels glazed, topped by a rectangular fanlight featuring three ovals. This entrance is framed by a Doric porch with columns, wall pilasters, a fluted frieze with roundel ornament, and a moulded cornice. To the left, there is a one-storey wing with a four-pane wide window on the right, a central four-panel door with an ogee-shaped doorhead, and a two-light casement window to the left, also with a similar head. The garden front was altered in the late 19th century. Inside, the house retains contemporary decoration and fireplaces.
