Description
28 Temple Street is an early 18th-century building that stands two storeys high with an attic. It is constructed of colour-washed brick and features a string course at the first-floor level and a heavy modillioned wooden eaves cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles. This corner building has one end facing Temple Street and the side facing Temple Square.
On the Temple Street front, there is one window on the first floor and a shallow bow window from the 18th century on the ground floor to the left. This bow window has a fluted surround, a plain frieze, and a cornice. To the right of the bow window, there is a door set in a rich doorcase that includes fluted Corinthian pilasters with carved capitals, which support elaborately carved console brackets and a flat moulded wooden hood.
The Temple Square side features two dormers and two windows with moulded frames, along with one later door. Inside, there are moulded ceiling beams that may date back to the 16th century. Overall, this building is a fine example of an early 18th-century small town house.
Additionally, all the listed buildings on the south-west side of Temple Street form a group.
