Description

Nos 49 and 55 on London End are part of a large group of buildings that almost enclose a courtyard. They have origins dating back to the 16th century, were enlarged in the 17th century, and were refronted to the road in the 18th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick and feature an old tile roof with a moulded wooden eaves cornice and four chimneys. They are two storeys high, with the first floor displaying 11 flush sash windows and a moulded brick stringcourse at the ground floor level.

No 49 has a restored 19th-century shop front with windows and a central entrance framed by plain pilasters, which support an entablature. No 51 features a modern door within a wooden doorcase that has a moulded surround, panelled reveals, Tuscan pilasters, and a flat wooden hood on carved brackets. The left side has paired flush sash windows, while the right side has two flush sash windows. Between Nos 51 and 53a, there is a carriage entrance with wooden doors set within a moulded wooden frame. Inside, the walls reveal timber-framing and ceiling beams.

No 53a has a ground floor with a modern door in a timber doorcase with an open pediment and one sash window. Above the door, there is some exposed timber-framing. At the rear, there is a much restored 17th-century range of timber-framed buildings with red brick nogging, also two storeys high and topped with an old tile roof.
