Description

Abel’s Cottage is a medieval building with elements from the 17th and 18th centuries, located on the west side of High Street, Long Crendon. Originally known as The Smithy, it is a timber-framed structure incorporating two cruck trusses. The front of the cottage is a mix of colour-washed stone and brick. It has a thatched roof, with a one-storey lean-to against the south gable, which has a hipped roof covered with old tiles. The cottage features one 2-light casement window in the lean-to, a 3-light segmental headed leaded casement window on the left side, and two small windows on the right. There are two small upper windows hidden under the thatch, the left-hand one being a dormer with a tiled apron. The interior reveals a well-preserved cruck truss in the centre, with its blades terminating above the collar. Part of a second cruck is visible near the party wall shared with number 45, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1962.
